Seth Godin is my marketing guru, plain and simple. I love all his stuff, and I share what he's had to say with most anyone who'll listen.
But I've got to add another absolute favorite: Hug Your Customers by Jack Mitchell. It's an outstanding view of how to grow a business by loving the business and the people who buy from you. If your people don't buy into what Jack Mitchell has to say, they shouldn't be talking to your customers.

Seth Godin's Purple Cow was the first business book I ever recommended. If it were up to me , this book should be required reading for all high school graduates. Everyone can benefit from Seth's simple story about the power of being remarkable. Thank you Seth for a real classic!

In 2003, Purple Cow changed my life.
Yes, it really was that dramatic for me. At the time, I was working with my father in his sheet metal fabrication business and trying to create awareness for the company. The subtitle, Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable, was the insight we needed to change our thinking. The market barely knew our little four-person shop existed and we needed a way to get some attention. We focused our marketing to a single industry segment, developed a remarkable marketing kit, and doubled our customer base in twelve months. All that from a book that came in a milk carton.
- Todd Sattersten
The Purple Cow was the very first business book I ever read (July 2008!) and it couldn't have been a more perfect fit. Casual language, heartfelt passion and a perception of marketing easy to embrace = the perfect introduction to business for me.
Seth puts a high value on personal worth and contribution and believes in our ability to create fantastic products and experiences that have benefits that far outweigh monetary gain (although monetary gain is always appreciated).
I connected with Seth's message, which to me was more about living your life and running your business with integrity and a sense of responsibility. Creating value, not only in the products and services offered, but just as importantly in the inter-personal relationships developed through your business.
- Lezley Davidson
This manifesto taught me the essence of real marketing: to stand out from the herd and be remarkable. My consulting practice now initially engages clients almost ENTIRELY around this premise. All roads follow from this.
Seth Godin is Purple.
